"Bum"kin

Here is our response to Aunt Sarah's "butt"ernut squash. Erin got this at Cornbelly's this year. All the kids get to pick one pumpkin at the end of the day. She was having such a hard time choosing which one she wanted. That was until she came across this gem.

Being the little goofball that she is, she could not resist.

Have a happy day!

Happy Rainy Halloween Eve

So Halloween is being celebrated today since tomorrow is Sunday. The girls decided to be pirates this year. They pretty much put their costumes together themselves. I just had to make Afton a vest, and Erin a vest and shirt. Add a few various accessories and they were set.

It is rainy here and the girls had decided to not go trick or treating. They chose to stay at home, watch a movie, and eat all the candy the wanted. Hopefully they go to sleep tonight. :)

Here is a shot with all three of our little pirates.

We saw a pattern for a dog sweater with a skull and crossbones on it. So I just had to whip that up this week. I think it turned out well.

Have a safe and fun Halloween Eve.

Good Memories

I just came across this photo. It is from 2005 up at the cabin. Aunt Lillie was telling a story that I believe had some sort of wild cat in it. This photo made me laugh so I had to share. Just one of the reasons why I love this little girl.

Breakfast

Breakfast here has been pretty good and normal. They serve breakfast between 6:30 am and
10 am on most days. We have eaten at various times. Today I ate all alone. :(

Josh is in Stuttgart working. So I had to go down all on my own. Here is a photo from the internet that closely resembled what we have most days.

Today for instance I had some ham slices (round like in the photo) with a slice of gouda cheese on it. Some scrambled eggs and bacon. A small pastry. And sometimes fruit (if it looks decent). Also a glass of orange juice to drink.

Josh usually gets the same except no ham or bacon. Instead he gets some smoked salmon instead.

The food I have had so far is not bad. Pretty much like what we can get at home. Although I am looking into getting a nice German pastry before we leave. I better hurry and find a place that sells good ones.

Ciao for now.
( I know that is Italian but I have heard quite a few people say it here.)

Greetings from Munich

Hallo!
(German for hello)

Well now, it has been quite some time since my last post. I have so many things to update on. But for right now I have 2 sweet girls at home that are desiring me to update and show them some pictures. So for now the queue will be slightly askew. :)

As most of you know Josh and I are in Germany. I am updating from the hotel while he is working.

We left home on Tuesday, and arrived here in Munich on Wednesday morning. The flight was long and, no, it is not easy to sleep on the plane. I used to be able to sleep anywhere. Guess not now.

Anyway, when we got here a gentleman from the office Josh is working with was at the airport to pick us up. We were supposed to stay at one of the employees house since the hotel was not available till the next day. But that guy was sick. So we went into the office to check other hotels in the area for the night. That didn't take too long, and then we were off to the Alarun. A cozy little hotel in the town of Unterschleißheim.

It was morning here and we had missed our Tuesday night but did not want to go to sleep or we would never be able to go to sleep that night. But we needed something. So we set an alarm and took a little snooze.

Wow! Was that a quick nap. But we pushed through it and decided to go exploring a little bit. Or we would fall back asleep for sure. So we went to the hotel desk and bought some train tickets, got directions to the train stop, and were on our way.

Figuring out the train system here was not too difficult. I still don't know if I am heading north or south at times but as long as I have a map and street signs we are okay.

So we took the S-bahn to the Marienplatz stop. That is the main stop with old buildings, etc. This is what you see when you get off the train and up the stairs to the outside world.

(no, I did not take this photo. But I wanted to show you the whole building. All I have is smaller shots. You'll see those later.)

So this building is the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall).
It was built between 1867 and 1908 and hosts the city government. You can actually go into the building and explore but we will go back to that in a moment. We did not go in the building yet because we were so hungry. So off to find food. You may be wondering, "What does one eat in Germany?" Well that is what I was thinking as well. We headed down the crowded street and what did we find?

Yup, McDonalds. We came all the way to Germany and had McDonalds. Hey, it was a safe choice for me. :)
So we had a little lunch and then decided to find a restroom before we went exploring some more. We went downstairs and found the Toilette. There was a lady at the bottom of the stairs sitting at a table with a plate on it. I had heard that you would have to pay to use the bathroom here. I guess I thought that if you paid for a meal it would be included. But nope, almost every restroom we have seen has had a lady out in front collecting her toll.
(Just FYI if your ever out of the country)

We were on our way again. We headed back toward the town hall again. I was still trying to figure out exactly where we were and where we wanted to go. One of the first old structures we passed by was this one.

I was not quite sure what it was. There was an inner courtyard with these tower type structures off to the sides. All the signs were in German so I had no idea what it was. I liked the looks of it though and thought I would take a photo and figure out later what it was. Well I found out that it is Isartor which is one of four main gates of the medieval city wall. It served as a fortification for defense and is the most easterly of Munich's three remaining town gates. The gate (German: Tor) is located close to the Isar and was named after the river.

After looping around this we were back in front of the town hall. We decided to go in and check it out. It was a beautiful building with grand staircases, beautiful archways, columns,

and every window was stained glass. They had a room in one of the upper levels that was obviously done in an American theme. So we had to take some photos there. Here we are in front of Lady Liberty herself.

They had some windows done in farming scenes, Paul Revere's famous ride, and of course our favorite Presidents.

George Washington.

And Abraham Lincoln.

From here we really had no plan as to where we wanted to go. Just that we needed to keep walking or we would fall asleep. So we just headed down a road to see what we could see. After passing many shops we came to one of the famous streets of the city. Maximilianstraße which was named after Maximilian II I believe. Who was the ruler of Bavaria from 1848 - 1864. The royal family had their homes built in this area. As well as other buildings like the National Theatre.

We stopped here for a quick pose with Maximilian I, who was actually Max II's grandfather, in front of the theatre.

After a quick pose here we went on up the road. We passed by this romanesque statue. I think Josh was done with posing for photos. But that is what you get when you are not the one holding the camera. :)

Then on up the road just a little to this building.

Maximilianeum.

This is a school that Maximilian had built for gifted students. But is now used for government purposes as well.

Here is a statue of Maximilian II who had the school built.

After the long trek up to this point we decided to head back to the hotel. We were not sure how late the trains ran and wanted to get back to the hotel for some long awaited rest. But which way to go. Well, we had seen shops and buildings so we thought that we would like to take a nice stroll in this.

They have so many lush green parks in this city. It is an amazing country. I love our mountains. But I would just LOVE to have this in my back yard.

So we just strolled along the trail. Took a photo over the Isar river.

And then when we started seeing buildings again decided that was a good place to turn to try to get back to the train.

This is just one of the MANY churches they have in the city. Lukaskirche (St. Luke's Church)
Just amazing buildings.

So we wound our way back to the train. Made sure we were on the right one. And tried to endure the sweltering train ride back to our stop. After just a few minutes walk...

We were back at our hotel to freshen up and go to dinner. Out in front of the hotel there was a Biergarten (beergarden). They sure do love their beer here. Josh had a steak with country potatoes (seasoned potato wedges). And I had BBQ chicken breast with a salad and country potatoes. Before our meal came the waitress served us a traditional Bavarian salad. It was basically a meat/pickle jello. For any of you who really know me you should know that I do NOT do pickles. I toughed my way through most of one of the two slices she served me. But I could not do the whole thing. The chicken and potatoes were very good. The salad had mustard dressing. Again with the icky things. :( And I had a Coke Light to drink. They don't call them diet here. It is light.

By about 9:30 we were finally done. The service is slow here. I guess they do that on purpose. They like to allow people to enjoy their meals and good conversation. We have learned that if we need to get somewhere just flag down your waitress and tell her you would like your check. Otherwise you will be not so patiently waiting for a long time. :)

So after dinner we went back to the hotel and got some sleep. That was pretty much day 1 in Munich for us. I will update more later when I have a chance.

Auf wiedersehen for now.

Fun Fieldtrip

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to be some of the few people to see the
last rocket booster for the space shuttle to be tested before being sent
off to Florida. It was a long drive. Not without it's hiccups. Shawn rolling his truck. And "S" throwing up all over himself and "B". Poor kiddos. But it was a day that we truly enjoyed. I only have photos of the massive clouds of smoke the rocket booster sent out. ( I am just not sure how to post the video right now)

The girls were sitting on the hood of the car when the countdown began. "J" who we had taken with us (because of his brother puking) was buckled securely into the passenger front seat. He had heard of the earthquake type rumbling that this thing was going to make. And he was just making sure he was safe. :) So after the countdown the rocket shot off and about 8 seconds later we heard the loud blast and the ground started rumbling. It was just so exciting to watch and know that this huge thing is what pushes our rockets out into space. We had a very educational day. And thanks to Penny's dad who had plenty of handouts and explanations on how things worked. He even gave us a tour of the Rocket Garden up at ATK. Showing the different rockets they have used over the years.

That was not the end of our fun day however. We then headed up the road to the Golden Spike. We hope to go back in the spring/summer when they are doing more with the trains. But that was a fun time of learning about railroad history and just running around.

Here is a shot of all the kiddos and Penny in front of the museum.

We had to go into the train house to look at the train replicas they have. They were pretty cool. During this off season the just polish everything up and do repairs for the shows they put on in the summer. We will have to check that out again when we can see the trains outside.

Here are just a couple of shots I took inside the train house. The lighting wasn't that great. But I liked this one of Angelic and "H".

And this one of "J". I just like the lighting and the way he is thoughtfully looking into the distance. Thanks for spending the day with us "J". It was great to have another kid for the day.

After the train house Penny led us to the bird refuge. We were able to walk around and see the exhibits inside. They had some pretty cool habitat exhibits. And other interactive exhibits about birds. The kids had a great time exploring and running up and down the ramps with each other.

It was a great time. Thanks Penny for putting this all together for us. We look forward to more times of fun and exploration with you guys.

Gift the 3rd

Okay, I think that I have kept you waiting long enough for the 3rd and final post on the lovely gifts from Sarah and Jason.

These we also received in a package after Christmas. But they were well worth the wait.

Sarah, I am sure, spent a ton of time making these lovely ornaments. Each of them hand stitched with love. (right Sarah? :) )

I love each and every one of them. Sarah did ask which one was my favorite.
That was very tough. I just have such a hard time with choosing favorites.
Here are my top 3 favs however.

#3

Is this sweet little cow. I just loved the purple spots. I am sure this one took some time.

----------------------------------------

#2

I love this monster. Scared, shy, whatever the face he is pulling. It just makes me smile.

-------------------------------------------

And drum roll please for

#1

I just love this bird. The fabric that Sarah backed it with just goes so perfectly.

I just couldn't stand putting these into a box for the next year so I currently have some of them hanging in my kitchen. And I have promised the girls that we can put them in their room to enjoy for the next 10 months.

Thanks again you guys for the lovely homemade gifts. We absolutely love them.

Gift the 2nd

Here is the promised second installment on the telling of our wonderful gifts we received from far away this year. This is the gift that Jason made for Josh. I knew at first that it was going to be made of wood. Later on Sarah told me that it was going to be a game board (checkers, etc.). I had no idea exactly what to expect.

This is what we (Josh) received.

A totally awesome, rustic checkers board.
Jason makes wood furniture on up to full fledged log cabins.
(Maybe some day he could build me one :) )
Thanks Jason, we love it.

Here are a few other angles so you can see it in all its glory.

Close-Up
(notice the dark piece in the back of the first row, that's my fav. It has a handle and everything)

And here is the side view. So you can kinda see what it was made of.

Once again, Jason, thanks for all of your hard work. And the lovely gift.

You all may be thinking that is the end of the gifts. You would be wrong. Sarah really outdid herself. I am sure that you all hope that she pulls your name next year. Stay tuned for the last of the amazing gifts is sure to be posted soon.

Gift the 1st

So for Christmas this year Josh and I were lucky enough to have both Jason and Sarah give to us. I knew that they were hand making our gifts so I was very excited to see what they would do.
The day after Christmas we went over to mom and dad's house for the party. I was not expecting anything that day since Sarah had already told me our gifts would be late.
I was so pleasantly surprised when a gift was handed to me from them.
The gift was a beautiful set of wooden candle holders. We absolutely love them. Birch I think???
Here is a photo of them as we have them set up on our entertainment unit.

Thanks guys we love them a lot.

That was not the end of the gifts however. There were more to come in the mail.
Those I will save for another post. Sorry you will have to wait. :)
